From the world's leading business communication author, this quarterly e-newsletter brings you teaching tips, classroom techniques, current events, and handouts to enrich your courses.
Fall 2013 - Inside This Issue
Fall is here and soon the holidays will be upon us. I hope your semesters are going smoothly and that you are finding my textbooks and supplemental materials helpful.
ABC in New Orleans--A Blast!
I was thrilled so see so many of you in October at the Association of Business Communication annual convention! I'm sure you'll agree that it was one of the best conferences in recent history. It was particularly wonderful to visit the Crescent City after the ABC annual conference was re-routed to avoid Katrina. As you can see from the photo, my co-author Dana Loewy and I enjoyed getting into the spirit of New Orleans with ABC Executive Director Jim Dubinsky.
On the "Death" of the Memo and the Sales Letter
In addition to a research roundup about teaching ethics in this issue of my newsletter, you'll love reading Janet Mizrahi's article ABC 2013 Theme: The "Death" of Traditional Genres? in which she writes about two sessions we attended at the convention.
As for burying those two genres—not so fast! No doubt, e-mail today is the No. 1 internal and external communication channel in most organizations. E-mail is also king in direct marketing. However, as the HBR Guide to Better Business Writing correctly states, "There is still a need for longer memos and reports to get people up to speed on an issue, to induce action, or both." The Guide then proceeds to outline the direct strategy and components of a routine memo. In BC:PP, 8e we discuss the current uses of the memo, and we believe that for now, teaching how to write a well-organized memo in addition to a well-structured e-mail is excellent practice for students.

Change Is in the Air!
It is with mixed feelings that I share the following news. Beginning in January, I am turning over the newsletter to two trusted colleagues: my co-author Dr. Dana Loewy and my newsletter editor for the last eight years, Prof. Janet Mizrahi. Although I am as energetic as ever, I find that revising, producing, and promoting three textbooks in the digital age requires a growing team. I have put out a newsletter for over twenty-five years, and it's time for a change.
In fact, we are planning many exciting changes in the coming months! Look for us soon on Facebook, YouTube, and other social media outlets. I promise Dana and Janet will continue to bring you useful materials to ease your teaching load and that you will barely notice my absence.
I wish you the happiest of holidays and a wonderful new year.
